GPD XD - Legacy Rom - ext4 format

Summary:

Legacy Rom is a custom rom made for the GPD XD gaming device. When it was first released, the rom system partition was formatted in ext3 format. Now to most of us that is not a problem and from our experience we couldn't care less because changing the format does nothing as far as performance or user interaction. The main reason I reformatted it was to take advantage of the TWRP Recovery. So if you do not want to mess with it, do not worry you can still install CWM. If you do not wish to reformat or upgrade, I ask you to please read on to see how easy it is to update. To know why TWRP is better than CWM you can read about it HERE.

As of September 23rd of 2017 all distrubutions of Legacy Rom from this website will be in ext4 format.

Why does Legacy Rom have to be in ext4 format?

It doesn't. The only reason I reformatted it in ext4 was to take advantage of TWRP Custom Recovery. TWRP does not pick up the system.img inside of Legacy Rom. If you have an older version of Legacy Rom, then you most likely have it formatted in ext3 and even though TWRP will install and even attempt at flashing, it will not work. There are plenty of advantages in switching to ext4 and if you want a better explanation of this please visit this site HERE, but the only reason I did it was to take advantage of TWRP Custom Recovery.

Just know that changing versions is easy and you can do it without losing data.

How can I tell what version of Legacy Rom I have?

Go into your GPD XD settings > Then go to About tablet > Then scroll down to Build number. If you see LegacyRom-XD Kitkat (ext4) then you have ext4 version. If not, you have the ext3 version.

How do I convert my Legacy Rom to ext4 format?

Everyone with Legacy Rom already installed should fall into 4 groups:

I don't want Legacy Rom ext4, does it really matter?

The only noticeable difference between the two formats is just the ability to use TWRP Recovery with Legacy Rom ext4. If you decide you do not want to use TWRP and reformat to ext4 you can simply use CWM Recovery with the older Legacy Rom. If you want to know how these two recoveries differ you can go to this helpful website HERE. As far as performance and user interaction, the GPD XD will be the same.
