GPD XD - Using CWM for Back Up and Restore

Summary:

A custom recovery environment will do the same things as the stock Android recovery. However, it will also have additional features. Custom recoveries often have the ability to create and restore device backups. Flashing this recovery environment onto your device replaces the default, stock recovery environment with a third-party, customized recovery environment. This is a bit like flashing a custom ROM like LegacyRom — but, instead of replacing your device’s Android operating system, it replaces the recovery environment.

ClockworkMod Recovery (CWM) can create and restore NANDroid backups - backups of an Android device’s entire file system. ClockworkMod offers a file browser that allows you to easily browse, manage, and restore backups. It also has other advanced features that will be useful if you’re installing and dealing with custom ROMs.

This tutorial will help you use CWM Recovery to make a NANDroid Backup and Restore it when needed. This is a backup at the highest level. Always back up!

Before you get started:

  • Make sure your GPD XD is fully charged. ( Depending on how much you have on GPD XD Backup may take a while )

Easy Tutorial: BackUp

  1. Start Recovery Mode on your GPD XD: [Shown on video- time: 0:27 ] Your GPD XD must be powered all the way down before you start. Press and hold Vol+ and Power at the same time until you see the GPD Logo appear. Then release.

  2. Select - backup and restore : [Shown on video- time: 0:44 ] : Using Vol+ or Vol-  to navigate, go to - backup and restore then select it using Power button.

  3. Select - backup to /external_sd : [Shown on video- time: 0:57 ] : Using Vol+ or Vol-  to navigate, go to - backup to /external_sd then select it using Power button. For this tutorial I chose to save to sd card. I think it is the best option

  4. Select - ++++ Go Back ++++ : [Shown on video- time: 0:44 ] : Using Vol+ or Vol-  to navigate, go to - ++++ Go Back ++++ then select it using Power button.

  5. Select - reboot system now : [Shown on video- time: 0:44 ] : Select it using Power button.

  6. Select - NO : [Shown on video- time: 0:44 ] : Your GPD XD should be rooted by now. There is another video for rooting GPD XD. If you arent rooted use this method: ( Link )

  7. You are now Backed UP !

Notes:    Your back up will be stored in / mnt / external_sd / clockworkmod / backup / [Your backup folder name].The backup name is generated by the date/time it was created.
Example: / mnt / external_sd / clockworkmod / backup / 2017-03-23.22.11.28.
I highly recommend once you are backed up, use a file explorer like ES File Explorer and rename the file to something you will remember like MarioThemeBackup.
Example: / mnt / external_sd / clockworkmod / backup / MarioThemeBackup.
This will not affect your ability to use this restore as long as you dont move it and it will make it easier to tell what each backup is.

** Important thing to note is that this particular version of CWM for the GPD XD will only read MicroSD cards formatted in Fat/Fat32. **

Easy Tutorial: Restore

  1. Start Recovery Mode on your GPD XD: Your GPD XD must be powered all the way down before you start. Press and hold Vol+ and Power at the same time until you see the GPD Logo appear. Then release.

  2. Select - backup and restore : Using Vol+ or Vol-  to navigate, go to - backup and restore then select it using Power button.

  3. Select - restore from /external_sd : Using Vol+ or Vol-  to navigate, go to - restore from /external_sd then select it using Power button. For this tutorial I chose to save to sd card so we restore from same place. I think it is the best option.

  4. Select - TheNameOfYourBackUp : Using Vol+ or Vol-  to navigate, go to the name of the backup you want to use then select it using Power button. CWM will name the files by the Date/Time they were created. Hopefully you took my advice from the BacUp tutorial and renamed it to something easier to remember.

  5. Select - Yes - Restore : If you are sure that is the right backup then use Vol+ or Vol-  to navigate, go to - Yes - Restore then select it using Power button. Wait for it to finish restoring.

  6. Select - ++++ Go Back ++++ : Using Vol+ or Vol-  to navigate, go to - ++++ Go Back ++++ then select it using Power button.

  7. Select - reboot system now : Select it using Power button.

  8. Select - NO : Your GPD XD should be rooted by now. There is another video for rooting GPD XD. If you arent rooted use this method: ( Link )

  9. You are now Restored to the exact state you left it in on your Backup!

** Important thing to note is that this particular version of CWM for the GPD XD will only read MicroSD cards formatted in Fat/Fat32. **
